Center Director - David A. King
Welcome to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Michoud Assembly Facility, located in eastern
New Orleans
. In 1973, Martin Marietta Aerospace was awarded a contract to design, develop and manufacture nine external propellant tanks for the Space Shuttle System. The external tank serves as the structural backbone of the Shuttle, and provides some 1.6 million pounds of propellants for the Shuttle’s three main engines.

Chief Operating Officer - Clyde S. "Chip" Jones
The Michoud Assemble Facility is an 832-acre site that includes one of the world’s largest manufacturing plants, with 43 acres under one roof, and a port with deep-water access, permitting the transportation of large space systems and hardware. Managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, Michoud is responsible for the design, manufacture and assembly of the space shuttle’s external tank. Michoud also has been selected to support NASA's Constellation Program for the agency's exploration missions to return to the moon and travel beyond. I encourage you to take some time to review this site and learn about Michoud's rich history, the people who work here and to understand how we have been supporting Space Flight since NASA was formed in 1958. |
