As an employee of a State or local government, Indian tribal government, an institution of higher education, or other eligible organization, you may serve with NASA for up to two years with the possibility of extensions for up to an additional 4 years. The legal authority for assignments under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act is title 5, United States Code, sections 3371 through 3376 and 5 USC 9808. The regulations can be found in 5, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 334.
Your assignment has been made for purposes for which NASA has determined are of mutual concern and benefit to the Federal agency and to your non-Federal organization. Your assignment has been made to achieve objectives such as:
- strengthening the management capabilities of NASA
- assisting the transfer and use of new technologies and approaches to solving governmental problems;
- facilitating an effective means of involving state and local officials in developing and implementing Federal policies and programs; and,
- providing program and developmental experience which will enhance your performance in his or her regular job.
