Headquarters is committed to presenting to our new hires an effective orientation and sponsor program. HQ understands that orientation is an essential component for new hires to get acquainted with NASA HQ and become productive in a short period of time. In addition, providing new hires with agency level information is essential to ensuring they establish a broader understanding of NASA and how his or her work contributes to the mission. Once a new employee is hired, a partnership begins between NASA and the employee.
During our one day orientation process, the new hires complete an overview of the following:
- Orientation will be conducted on the first day by a Human Resources Specialist (HRS) from the Human Resources Management Division (HRMD), Staffing and Classification Services Team. The HRS will conduct the welcoming presentation, which will include an overview of NASA Headquarters and introduction of sponsors. During this session, the new hires will view the video “A Renewed Spirit of Discovery”.
- A Human Resources Assistant will conduct an overview of “need to know” information such as: sick/annual leave accrual, holidays, pay periods, pay day, pay stubs, NASA People web site, who’s who information, and will assist new hire in completing critical forms. A Benefits Specialist will conduct an overview of type of benefits, entitlements, and eligibilities. This session will include a viewing of the TSP overview and OPM Benefits videos.
- An attorney from NASA’s Office of General Counsel will present a short briefing on ethics and related standards of ethical conduct.
- A Human Resources Assistant will provide new hires with a tour of the HQ building after the orientation, which will include the health unit, fitness center, café, exchange store, credit union, travel office, parking garage, etc. The last stop on the tour will be the security office to pick up their badges. Sponsors will be informed to pickup new hires from security and accompany them to the IT Training session of the orientation process.
